Taxes

Sure we all hate paying them, but as a business owner myself, I find them so infuriating. Why hasn't the government come up with a tax system (this is Canada I am ranting about) that allows me to quickly, easily and effectively pay my taxes without shelling out a ton of money to an accountant or dragging myself through horribly written software?

We are in 2009, and I still feel like I am paying too much (not that the government will correct my mistakes) thanks to the complexity of the system.

Anyone have any tax tips, favourite tax software or funny tax stories? Let's rant and rave!

Use better written software? Learn tax law and do it by hand? Not a lot of options really. Taxes aren't that complex for most people, though working for yourself does tend to complicate them a bit.

Being a picky bastard I've always done my own taxes and haven't had any issues thus far...frankly, Canadian taxes are a lot easier to do than American taxes (did my wife's tax return this year and she needed to file them in the US). Suck it up and learn some tax law, find a program you like, or hire someone to do it for ya. Depending on your needs it probably wouldn't be that expensive, and with all your deductions (guessing a bit just cause I know you're situation) I imagine that it wouldn't be that bad to do it yourself, or you could always trust a friend to do it for a few bucks

The last couple years I've used ufile.ca with the current tax package infront of me to check a few things here and there, and it's done well for me, especially since I haven't made enough in a year to actually need to pay for it...though I'm hopeful that will change for next year heh.

I've been using Ufile.ca, but last year transitioned into using QuickTax online. It was decent, but I still didn't feel confident in what it was giving me as responses. I guess that it is due to my lack of tax knowledge. I do agree that our system is a bit better than the USA. But after paying income tax, and all the garbage that goes with that, I also have to pay GST. If I end up having to pay the unified HST in Ontario, my business will die!
